Nikon D600 Price Drop! Now Just $1999 WITH 24-85 VR Kit

The Nikon D600 with 24-85 VR kit is now available for just $1999.  http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikonusa/en_US/pd/ThemeID.18145600/productID.256095900/pgm.81985000

The same deal is available at Amazon until December 15, 2012.

FYI I bought my Nikon D600 for $2099 + tax.  Compared to that, this deal is like getting the 24-85 VR lens for free!  Alternatively, you may be able to sell the 24-85 VR (retails for $600) for $400 or $500 and cut down the price of the D600 to $1500 or $1600. (Wow... Almost makes me want to buy another one....!)

Offer good until December 29, 2012 only at the Nikon store.  Plus, at the Nikon store for December 14-16, 2012 only, you can get a DSLR/laptop shoulder bag AND next day shipping for free!

This offer appears to be intended to take the wind out of the Canon 6D's sales (pun intended hehe) (comparison here).  Recently, Canon did a similar thing to the D600 by drastically lowering the price of the Canon 5D Mark II.  (The difference is that the D600 is a cutting edge camera whereas the 5DII is a capable but aging camera.)

  1. Mic,
I bought the D600 kit in September for $2600, with no 2% rebate or freebies. I was about to go on a once-in-a-lifetime leaf viewing tour in New England and made this somewhat impulsive purchase only the week before. That I had pent up demand for a full-frame DSLR for many years made it an even easier decision at the time, and it was available immediately.

I'm glad for those who are getting this deal. The D600 is a great camera, after all. However, it teaches me to NEVER AGAIN buy any Nikon product when it is first introduced, and even IF I buy later, I will be able to count on Nikon to eventually give me a deal or rebate.

Pick almost ANY product. We are in an era of gross overproduction and model saturation. It is a buyers market. If Nikon wants to get aggressive about it, SO WILL I!

Actually, it is wise to never buy ANY product when it is first introduced. I didn't follow my own advice and paid the price. As the old saying goes (something like) "Those who live by the leading edge of technology will be sacrificed on it."

I tried to find a direct e-mail contact link on the Nikon site to let them know how I feel, but couldn't. Anyway, I don't expect them to offer any consolation deal to early adopters like you and I.

By the way, in addition to the 2% rebate, B&H includes almost $200 of useful extras with their D600 kit compared to the Nikon store.

As for those who just want to buy one of the add-on promotion lenses at this time, they also don't get any savings unless they happen to be buying a body/kit. What about those who just want a 2nd D600 body for $1500? I suspect the 24-85VR resale value will plummet to more like $200-300.

The amazing Sony A99 is looking better and better. I'll be checking it out thoroughly at the ImagingEXPO, along with all those superb Zeiss autofocus lenses. But, of course, I won't buy it or any other photography gear until it has been out for a good while, and I can get a deal on it.

    Once bitten, twice shy.

    Cheers!

    1. Hi Ken. Well, I knew when I got the D600 that it would definitely have some sort of price drop eventually, as did the D700. I was willing to pay a little extra to get better photos sooner.

I did not expect such a steep price drop so soon. It hurts Nikon's credibility with early adopters. But I guess there may have been other factors such as a strong desire to smother the 6D. I don't know...

I guess in the grand scheme of things it's not worth agonizing about. The truth is I bought my D3 for more than what I paid for the D600. I sold it and got the D600, thus improving my camera at a slightly lower cost. Since I got what I wanted I can't really complain much.

      Best regards,
      Mic
