Free Full Frame DSLRs From Kodak!

In a bid to bring back its days of dominance, Kodak will be launching an innovative marketing program where it will be giving away full frame DSLRs for free!  The catch: it uses a proprietary file format that cannot be used until it is "developed" through Kodak processing.

Olympus Stylus 1 Review (Part 1)

In this post we review the Olympus Stylus 1, a point and shoot camera that features a constant f/2.8 zoom of 28-300mm (in 35mm equivalent terms) and fits in your coat pocket.  In this part of the review, I will be discussing the camera itself, specifically:
  • Body.  Size, construction, etc.
  • Handling.
    • Shooting. The controls and how well they work.
    • Menus.
  • Shooting Experience and Performance.  LCD vs. viewfinder, metering, autofocus, manual focus, lag, battery life.
In Part 2 of the review, we'll take a closer look at the camera, including its lens and sensor quality. I will also discuss its special functions (including Wi-Fi), its application, and its usage, to analyze whether and how the Stylus 1 may fit your needs.

Notes:
         1.  I have had several point and shoot cameras but I have not used an Olympus point and shoot before, and I will be writing from that perspective.

         2.  Notes: All sample images are by me unless otherwise noted.  The product shots are from the LX5.  As for the Stylus 1 shots, they were edited in Lightroom (i.e. simple changes, minor dodging and burning) with no sharpening or noise reduction unless otherwise noted.

UPDATE 3/26/14: for shooters with no previous experience with Olympus, I added some information (mostly in the Menus section).  [Thanks Ed!]

Sony RX100: Pocket Rocket

The Sony RX100 has been in my posession for one year to date, and since my initial review, I hardly mentioned it, so I think it is time now to give it some front page headlines.

Nikon D600 Shutter Replacement Experience

You've probably heard by now that Nikon issued a service advisory offering to replace (not just clean or repair) the shutter of any D600 even with an expired warranty (except if they have previously repaired your D600).  I sent mine in a couple of weeks ago because I would effectively get a new shutter for free, something that normally costs around $300 to $400 to replace, and I figured it would improve the resale value.  I'd like to share my experience in case you're waiting for yours.

Exploring Micro Four Thirds

In my last post about the BlackRapid SnapR 35, some of you noted that I was using an Olympus E-M5.  Yes indeed I did get one.  Actually I recently got one other camera as well, a point-and-shoot.  That's the topic of this post.

Olympus FL600R Flash Review

Olympus FL600R

Following up on my previous Yongnuo flash review, I would like to talk to you today on my TTL capable, but rather tiny, Olympus flash.
